Gamelan in Japan
by Barbara Benary and Tomoko Deguchi
Survey of Indonesian gamelan in Japan: origins from mid-20th-century introductions through university programs in the 1970s; growth into dozens of community ensembles, teaching hubs (Tokyo/Osaka), and children’s programs; portraits of key organizers and teachers; and parallel streams of traditional performance and original composition. Case studies cover studio logistics in dense cities, cross-genre collaborations, disability-inclusive projects, and a composer residency shaping an hour-long work. Concludes with locally produced recordings and Japanese-language resources.
