Gamelan Gita Santi offers instruction in traditional music from Bali Indonesia in the heart of the Indonesian-American community in South Philadelphia. Our instruments, a Balinese Gamelan Angklung, were made by Pandé I Wayan Sukarta in 2019. The instruments were named by one of our teachers, Indra Sadguna; Gita literally means "beautiful sounds, voices, and singing" and Santi means "peace". This project is a three-way collaboration between Modero Dance, Gapura Philadelphia, and composer/performer Thomas Whitman with guest teaching artist I Nyoman Suadin. Other instructors have included Indra Sadguna and Putu Hiranmayena. Rehearsals take place at PAX, 2300 S 18th St, Philadelphia, PA 19145. Contact: Tom Whitman tom@twhitman.com.
