Tembang Sunda Poetry

Gary Young, Marcus Kaufman

This article introduces tembang Sunda, a traditional Sundanese vocal and instrumental genre performed with kacapi zithers, suling bamboo flute, and singers known as juru mamaos. Rooted in West Java’s cultural heritage, the repertoire ranges from epic tales of gods and kingdoms to themes of love, daily life, humor, and spirituality. Presented here are translations of several poems, including both classical works and modern compositions, highlighting the blend of devotion and playfulness that characterizes the tradition.
