Sasak Music in Lombok

This article explores the musical traditions of the Sasak people in Lombok, Indonesia, tracing their complex intersections with animist, Hindu-Buddhist, and Islamic influences. It outlines the historical syncretism that shaped pre-Islamic ceremonies involving music and dance, as well as the impact of rising Islamic fundamentalism on traditional performing arts.
