Our Identity and Our Heritage: the Preservation of Javanese Dance
by Dewi Galuh Sinta Sari
This article reflects on how Javanese dancers in Solo adapted to the pandemic by reviving and preserving rarely performed classical repertoire. With in-person practice and performances halted, artists organized virtual concerts that combined live dance with interviews of master teachers, highlighting the historical, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions of Javanese court traditions. These online events became both a means of artistic survival and a preservation project, ensuring younger generations and the wider public could reconnect with dances that embody identity and heritage.
