Mahambara: New Music from ISI Solo

Mahambara is a compilation of ten new works by composers from ISI Surakarta’s Karawitan Department. The album presents a broad range of approaches: reinterpretations of Islamic devotional pieces and children’s songs, explorations of Sundanese and Balinese influences, experiments with rhythmic patterns, and innovative treatments of classical Javanese forms. Each piece demonstrates how tradition can be reimagined while responding to contemporary life, highlighting the continuing vitality and creative potential of karawitan.
