Gamelanhuis: A Collective Home in Amsterdam
by Elsje Plantema
This report recounts how the Gamelanhuis in Amsterdam, home to multiple gamelan groups, adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic. After the cancellation of concerts, rehearsals, and milestone celebrations in early 2020, musicians sought creative solutions through online lessons, layered “spekkoek compositions,” and small-group rehearsals under health restrictions. Ensembles like Widosari, Mugi Rahayu, Wiludyeng, Gong Tirta, and Multifoon adjusted practices to maintain community and musical continuity, culminating in a handful of small live performances that provided a sense of renewal and connection despite ongoing uncertainty.
