Gamelan Sekar Jaya: Bali’s Living Arts Series

by Rebecca Selin

During the pandemic, Gamelan Sekar Jaya (GSJ) developed the Bali’s Living Arts Series to maintain connections, support Balinese artists, and address issues of equity. The series centered Indonesian and Indonesian-American voices through talks, performances, and online classes in dance, vocals, and instruments. Alongside artistic exchange, GSJ also engaged in anti-racism work, reflecting on the role of a community gamelan in the U.S. within broader struggles for justice. Future plans include online residencies, videos featuring Balinese master artists, and expanded cross-cultural programming.
