Gamelan Angklung in Denver (profile)

Wayne Vitale

This profile traces the origins and rapid development of the Denver Gamelan Angklung group, formed after musicians Mark McCoin and Mark Fuller were inspired by a trip to Bali. With support from the University of Denver and local collaborators, the ensemble quickly grew into a dedicated community-based group, learning traditional angklung repertoire and experimenting with new cross-cultural compositions such as Snoring Dog. Their work highlights the integration of Balinese traditions with Western musical backgrounds, the creation of new instruments, and their role within Colorado’s New Music scene. The group’s momentum and enthusiasm have positioned them to participate in national arts events such as the Festival of Indonesia.
