This article introduces the slendro gender panerus, focusing on the classification and function of its cengkok (melodic patterns). It presents three primary types: special cengkok, general cengkok, and cengkok gantungan, each demonstrated with notational examples. The article also explains the rationale for studying this under-documented instrument and offers selected material from three master musicians in Surakarta. Originally written as a final examination paper at ASKI, the article has been revised and annotated for an English-speaking audience.
