An introduction to the musical traditions of Cirebon
Richard North
This article explores the musical traditions of Cirebon, a culturally unique Javanese sultanate on the north coast of Java. Despite its location in West Java, Cirebon is ethnically and artistically Javanese, with traditions distinct from both Central Javanese and Sundanese cultures. The article highlights Cirebon’s gamelan, wayang, and topèng as cultural inheritances from East Java, and places its musical identity in historical context—particularly during the dynamic pasisir era under Sunan Gunung Jati. The analysis emphasizes Cirebon’s role in the broader spectrum of Javanese cultural diversity.
