Sasak Music in Lombok
David. Harnish
This article explores the musical traditions of the Sasak people in Lombok, Indonesia, tracing their complex intersections with animist, Hindu-Buddhist, and Islamic influences. It outlines the historical syncretism that shaped pre-Islamic ceremonies involving music and dance, as well as the impact of rising Islamic fundamentalism on traditional performing arts. While some earlier traditions are declining, new Islamic-inspired forms such as rudat and burdah have emerged. The piece also discusses the cultural interplay between Sasak and Balinese practices, highlighting hybrid genres and shifting ceremonial roles.
