Weraspati Gong, Sweden (profile)

Peter Hogenäs

This article recounts the development of Weraspati Gong, a Balinese gamelan group based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Founded by musicians inspired by firsthand experiences in Indonesia, the group began with Orff and European instruments before acquiring a Balinese gamelan. The ensemble, consisting mostly of musicians and educators, has introduced Balinese music to Swedish audiences through performances, cultural events, and festivals. Their efforts represent a unique cross-cultural musical exchange and a pioneering presence for gamelan in Scandinavia.
