Teachers on Tape: Innovation and Experimentation in Teaching Thai Music

Pamela Myers-Moro

This article examines innovation and experimentation in Thai music teaching, where traditional practices coexist with modern technologies such as tape recorders, computer-generated sound, and new forms of notation. Myers-Moro highlights field observations in Bangkok, where teachers and students incorporate recordings into lessons, sometimes treating machines as vessels of lineage and authority. These practices illustrate how technology is absorbed into Thai musical pedagogy while reinforcing enduring values of respect for teachers and tradition.
