Gamelan Town: Sundanese Arts at U.C. Santa Cruz (profile)

Linda Burman-Hall

This profile documents the development of Sundanese arts at the University of California, Santa Cruz, beginning in 1975 with the transfer of a gamelan set from UCLA. Under the leadership of master musician Undang Sumarna and later collaborations with theater specialist Kathy Foley, the program expanded into a major center for Sundanese music, dance, and puppetry. Offering multiple levels of gamelan instruction to hundreds of students each year, the program has staged large-scale dance dramas, wayang golek performances, and international appearances, becoming a hub of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural performance.
