Musical Transcription: from sound to symbol and back again
Jack Body
Jack Body reflects on the role of transcription as both an analytical tool and a creative practice. By moving from sound to symbol and back again, he confronts the limitations of notation while uncovering details of musical perception and structure. Rather than aiming for an objective replica, his transcriptions inspire reinterpretations that carry forward the qualities that first drew his attention. Used in his teaching at Victoria University of Wellington, transcription projects provide students with ear training, insight, and a springboard for new compositions, bridging analysis and creativity.
