Ra Ngandel: Martopangrawit’s last “experimental” composition

Mark Perlman, Sri Hastanto

This article presents Ra Ngandel (1986), the last experimental composition of R.L. Martopangrawit, written for ASKI Surakarta as a model for student examinations. Unlike many student works of the period, which emphasized novelty and abrupt transitions, Martopangrawit adopted a restrained approach, incorporating traditional forms, pathet, and irama while selectively using modern devices such as rebab bowing below the bridge, rhythmic speech, expanded instrumentation, and irregular meters. His intent was not to abandon tradition but to “develop” (membangun) karawitan in ways consistent with lived experience.
