Trimbat by Ida Bagus Made Widnyana (score)

Andrew McGraw presents Trimbat by Ida Bagus Made Widnyana, a meticulously rehearsed musik kontemporer work for three differently tuned Balinese ensembles (gong gede, kebyar, pelegongan). Using only jegogan and calung pairs plus three gongs, Widnyana builds an 11-pitch octave (with effective expansion via paired beating). Inspired by karya gede ceremonies where multiple groups perform simultaneously, the piece methodically introduces tone sets, then layers dense harmonic fields, interlocking textures, and rigorous large-scale polyrhythms.
