Two Poems by Otok Bima Sidarta
by Garret Kam
This article introduces two macapat poems by Otok Bima Sidarta, composed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Singkir Pageblug, written in Maskumambang meter, expresses sorrow over the outbreak while urging mindfulness and resilience. The piece was performed a capella in pelog pathet nem and later animated into a short film. Pandemi Ing Fitri, co-created with Sarjiyono and Mujiyono, reflects on celebrating Idul Fitri during the pandemic. Though not in traditional macapat form, it follows a structured syllable–vowel pattern and was performed with voice and accompaniment by Sidarta’s family. These works demonstrate how Javanese poetic and musical traditions adapt to contemporary challenges while remaining deeply rooted in cultural forms.
