Langen Suka

Active since the 1980s, promoting traditional Central Javanese gamelan music and dance in Sydney through performances, demonstrations, workshops, courses, and weekly practices. Originally formed as the Sydney University Gamelan Society after a continuing education course taught by Dr Jennifer Lindsay at the University of Sydney. Relaunched as Langen Suka Sydney Gamelan Association in 1999; reregistered as Langen Suka Gamelan Music Inc. in 2023. Director: Vi King Lim. Has access to gamelan instruments (slendro and pelog) owned by the Australian Museum and the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Sydney. Currently housed at a historic wool store building in Ultimo near Sydney Fish Market.

The gamelan of the Australian Indonesian Association of Victoria. Originally formed in July 1993 at the invitation of Mr Edhimurti Sunoko, then Consul of the Republic of Indonesia, to promote good relations between Australia and Indonesia through the performing arts. The name PERMAI literally translates as "beautiful" and is also an acronym for "Persahabatan Antara Masyarakat Australia dan Indonesia" (Friendship between the peoples of Australia and Indonesia).

Has commissioned hundreds of works, toured internationally, and produced a dozen recordings. Although the ensemble does arrange and perform traditional Sundanese music, Evergreen Club's focus has always been the performance of new music.

His instruments are replicas of the famous gamelan of Teges, Peliatan. Da Silva left in 2005, after which the gamelan was collectively purchased by the ensemble.

Repertoire: Traditional. Existed for a few years on an ad hoc basis, occasionally performing or producing events. Founded by Éric Da Silva, who had purchased a semar pegulingan/pelegongan replica of the one in Teges, Peliatan. Lacking a permanent space in Montreal, Da Silva moved instruments to Indonesian Embassy in Ottawa and founded Gamelan Semara Winangun. Participated in Gamelan Summit 1997 in Toronto and in 1995 produced a North American tour featuring dalang I Wayan Wija and musicians from Sukawati.

While on the faculty at Pitt René Lysloff began a program of Central Javanese gamelan until his departure a few laters later. In 1998 Andrew Weintraub restarted the program shifting its focus to Sundanese music of West Java. Under Weintraub's leadership Pitt established a guest artist program to connect Pitt students with top performing artists from West Java every spring.
