Lontar Publications

    Since1997, the American Gamelan Institute has supported the international distribution of valuable publications of the Lontar Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing English translations of indonesian literature, poetry, and art criticisism.

    The selected publications listed below are available directly from the American Gamelan Institute, and are being offered here with special prices. For classroom or retail use, or for large library orders, discounts are available. All forms of payment, including Purchase Orders from institutions, are accepted over a secure line.

    A poet's offering, in Balinese script han- painted on a lontar leaf. Lon32. $3. (Complimentary with any book order.)

    The Barikan Banner.
    A continuous narrative painting, on pumice paper, in five major scenes depicting 110 figures in both wayang and nonwayang styles. A late work of Sitisiwan (c.1865-1948) it is typical of banners used as household decoration by people of the Cirebon region. Lon62. $25.

    Calendar: Early Views (Historical Images of Indonesia from the British Library)(1998). Early Views of Indonesia 1998 calendar features images from the book of the same name - plates and details of Indonesian archaeological drawings from the Horsfield and MacKenzie collections in the Oriental and India Office Collections of the British Library. The images shown in this 1998 calendar help to give form to an era that in many ways is now gone forever. Lon11. $15.

Postcards first became popular in Indonesia (at the time the Dutch East Indies) in the late nineteenth century, and since that time young Indonesian women have appeared on innumerable cards.
