This file was originally posted to the BACN list (Bali Arts and Culture Newsletter, started by Deboer) by Michelle Chin. Bali Arts and Culture News (BACN) is an international interdisciplinary medium of communication for those interested in Balinese studies. From 1982 to 1999, 40 issues of this informal newsletter have been published. Since October 1998, it has been more practical to publish the BACN as a list on the internet. Frits deBoer (1937-1997) was the editor of the Bali Arts and Culture News from its inception in 1982 to 1997. He taught at Wesleyan University from 1963-97, and for many years was the Chair of the Theater Arts Department at Wesleyan.
A little known resource for Balinists with a special concern for Balinese music is the Wesleyan University World Music Archive, located on the 3rd floor of the Olin library. The library maintains a good collection of scores and recordings, with special strengths in some geographical areas, among them Indonesia. The collection includes both field recordings, made by researchers, and commercially issued tapes, long playing records, and compact discs. There follows a listing of the library's holdings of discs and some tapes relevant to Bali, as of January, 1997. Field recordings will be listed elsewhere, as will cassette tapes issued in Bali in the last thirty years or so. Many of them can be found in Andrew Toth's listing published in 1980 [Toth, Andrew. Recordings of the traditional music of Bali and Lombok. Compiled and annotated by Andrew Toth. [s.l.]: Society for Ethnomusicology, 1980. vi, 243 p.; 23 cm. Special series / Society for Ethnomusicology; no. 4. Includes index. Bibliography: p. 21-29.]. Some video recordings are also included.
This compilation is by no means a completed work. For permission to use the Archive, contact the librarian, Scores and Recordings, Wesleyan University, Middletown CT 06459, http://www.wesleyan.edu
